Amanda Bunton and Deanne Bradshaw each scored two goals to lead the Lady Jackets to a 6-1 win over the Asbury University Eagles.

The scoring began in the ninth minute for Cedarville when forward Rachel Brownfield carried the ball to the top of the box. Just as Eagles goalie Maegan Rogers came up to challenge Brownfield, she passed it to Bunton who had an open net to score on.

The next goal for Cedarville came in the 21st minute and was scored by Bradshaw, with Brownfield registering her second assist. Keeping play down in the Eagles’ defensive zone was the key to victory.
“We were able to have a good passing game,” Bunton said. “And their defense was kind of easy for us to break down a little bit.”

Coach John McGillivray also pointed to a weak Asbury defense and a lot of practice on Cedarville’s part to explain the Jackets’ prolific offense.

“We struggled this year with putting the ball in the net,” McGillivray said. “I think, as good as Asbury is, their back line played up high and really let us get in behind them a lot.”

The second half with an early goal in the 52nd minute when Kelsey Watkins passed to Bradshaw who scored high on the far post, making it 3-0.

Roughly three minutes later, Bradshaw passed to Bunton in the box. The pass hit off of Bunton’s foot and went into the net, just under the crossbar. Asbury made its only tally  on an unassisted goal from Kaitlyn Hooper in the 59th minute.

The score remained 4-1 until in the 88th minute. Kristie Wolff scored off of a pass from Ashlee Wilson. Then a minute later Dresden Matson scored her first goal of the season from Elise Hurley to close the scoring. Cedarville finished with 19 shots, while Asbury finished with eight.

Freshman goalie Christine Faulds made her first start of the season after recovering from a concussion. She only had to make one save because of the strong defense of her teammates. She said her defenders were “awesome” because “they were always there.”
